From The Daptone Stable, Charles Bradley And The Menahan Street Band Sing Heartaches And Pain

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

Digging into the Daptone crates we find… that other Dap-Kings guitarist, who also moonlights with Budos Band, Tommy “TNT” Brenneck, pictured below with (Mrs.) Amy Winehouse, continues to find time to keep releasing records as The Menahan Street Band with the help of friends from the Daptone family. The DAP1034 single Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band was released on July 24th this year. Enjoy the raw, groovy b-side to that single here.

Midlake on Sound Opinions - Full Show + Bonus Track[LISTEN]

Midlake Sound Opinions

“… When Jim and Greg were at SXSW last year they discovered one of their new favorite bands: Midlake. The Denton, TX quintet have been around for about 10 years, but Greg notes that the current Midlake is almost unrecognizable for the old one. He and Greg talk with 3/5 of the band (Eric Pulido, Eric Nichelson, Tim Smith) about how they came together and evolved. The lead singer Tim explains that OK Computer was integral to their development from a 30-minute jam band to what they are today. Psychedelic music fan Jim also wanted to ask what is in the water in Denton. Considering the size and location of the city, it’s surprising how many bands came out of there. Eric Pullido, the band’s rhythm guitarist, responds that the Denton community really supports art and music.” [READ MORE]

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

MC Alaska lets rip @ Philaflava… “I think at the time she was dating someone from ‘Sex in the City’. He had an apartment right next to the old office I used to work at. So I was outside, I used to smoke cigarettes, I was outside having a cigarette, and she just basically walked up to the buzzer, and I was like ‘Oh shit, that was Rosario Dawson!’ Also, at that same spot, Jay-Z recorded ‘The Black Album’ right across the street.” [READ MORE]

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - Top 10 Most Exciting Artists At Entertainment Weekly

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - “It Hurts To Be Alone” (Bob Marley cover) [STREAM]

“The nine-piece is so committed to their chilled-out Motown vibe that they recorded 100 Days in analog. Perhaps this retroness is a nod to Jones making up for lost time. ”I didn’t [get booked] in the ’70s and ’80s because they told me I was too dark-skinned, too short,” says the Georgia-raised singer. ”I was born in the ’50s, in the South. The KKK burned a cross in my grandfather’s yard. But I figured one day people would accept me for who I am.” [READ MORE]
