Flaming Lips Make Peace With Death For Halloween

Monday, October 29th, 2007

“Oklahoma Gazette invited resident Okie eccentrics the Flaming Lips to participate in its annual “Ghouls Gone Wild” Halloween parade, the Lips enlisted their biggest fans to join the March Of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons–a “spectacle celebrating the mysterious, the supernatural, and the otherworldly,” according to the band’s recruitment email.” - Yahoo Music

Flaming Lips Halloween

“As Spinner previously reported, the Flaming Lips will lead 1,000 volunteers in a “March of the Thousand Flaming Skeletons” as part of the annual Halloween parade in Oklahoma City this Friday. Spinner recently caught up with leading Lip and ringmaster Wayne Coyne as he made preparations. “A lot of Halloween things end up being dumbed-down,” Coyne tells Spinner. “We’re trying to make it an adult experience and just kind of get to a little more of the ‘death’ aspect of it.” - AOL Spinner [READ MORE]

Long interview with Wayne Coyne’s hometown papers News OK:

NewsOK: You could be living anywhere you want, but you’ve chosen to stay in Oklahoma and you’ve even chosen to remain pretty much in the neighborhood where you grew up… Why did you choose to stay here?

Coyne: Well, early on we didn’t really make any of those choices. We were just being who we really were, which I think is the only way you can do it. I was 22 when we put out our first record and began this life as The Flaming Lips. There’s no way I could have looked ahead 25 years and thought “staying in Oklahoma is going to be one of the most unique things about us.” It was more about who you were and your ideas and the music you made…. … also recently in Oklahoma City, “Confetti was shot from guns, big balloons soared, and fans in alien and Santa costumes mingled with business-suited civic leaders Thursday as the city officially recognized the Flaming Lips as a part of its cultural landscape.” [READ MORE]

British Sea Power Get Billboard, Tripwire Excited For Upcoming Album

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

“Wilkinson describes “Do You Like Rock Music?” as more “contemporary” than previous efforts, and that the title exemplifies what the band was trying to accomplish. “Partly what we’re saying is that rock is a broad and encompassing thing, capable of a lot,” he says. New to the mix this time are female backing singers and “funny little instruments, like harmoniums. We tried to get a big choir feeling,” Wilkinson says. “That’s part of why we took so long; we were at home, adding things and experimenting.” - Billboard [READ MORE]

“Starting off with the upbeat “Atom,” the band punches the listener in the face with a heart pumping rollercoaster ride of a song. The roaring “Ohhhhs” that chug the chorus along only help matters. Think the balls of Black Francis’s work mixed with the hugeness of an Arcade Fire song.” - The Tripwire [READ MORE]
