British Sea Power Rock All The Way To #4 On CMJ Top 200!

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Glorious debut in the CMJ Top 20 spins at college radio last week for the glorious album!

Catch “Waving Flags”: as KEXP’s Song of the Day on Tuesday!

“The ambitious art rockers have always wanted to bemore than a cult:their third album should help fulfil that dream. Full of dramatic ’80s rock flourishes, it spans the years between Echo & The Bunnymen and Arcade Fire.” 4 stars, Q Recommended

“… with guitars that ring and roar and percussion that gushes and thunders, they finally turn their lyrical peculiarities into a legitimate churn of ideas, rather than a posturing diversion.” - Spin [READ MORE]

British Sea Power The band’s been kicking up quite the fuss on their UK dates lately, as NME reported, “… During ‘No Lucifer’ the band were joined on stage by a topless man draped in the Polish flag who wore a crash helmet and a wrestling-style belt, who proceeded to punch the air throughout the song. The “visitor” made a second appearance as the gig finished amidst a climax of wailing guitars, crashing cymbals and drums. Another “guest” appeared wearing the Finland flag during the song, while the band’s 10ft bear suit was revived for the climax, with it stomping about the stage as the band trashed their surroundings…” - NME [READ MORE]

Hmmm… that topless flag man does look familiar though…?

Brakes Receive Most Overlooked Honors At eMusic

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

“Eamon Hamilton makes angry hilarity sound easy. And when you’re as pissed and funny as the Brakes’ singer, easy it just may be. The band’s punk has gotten a smidgen less twangy than on debut Give Blood, if only because they’ve gotten faster, wriggling too desperately to waste much time weeping into their beers. (They only get mournful about real serious issues, like poor cell phone reception and record shopping by yourself.)…” - eMusic [READ MORE]

British Sea Power fans and brakesbrakesbrakes fans best take note of each other! As some may now, Eamon of Brakes used to play keyboards and “crowd-drum” in BSP! And here they all are, reunited for once recently in NYC, according to Sea-space anyway!

Help: brakesbrakesbrakes’ Eamon Loses Guitar @ Glastonbury

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

From brakesbrakesbrakes mailing list…

“Eamon is making a plea to all Glastonbury attendees after losing his guitar at the festival on Sunday morning. The Gewa Tennesee Bluesbird was misplaced in the mud outside the Leftfield Tent between 3am and 7am. It had just been used for a performance and was in a black case and had a Bronze Ace wooden mic pick up, with the Bronze wording rubbed off. Although it is only worth around £120 it is of great sentimental value and was used to write most of Brakes two albums. If you know of its whereabouts please email the band at brakes@brakesbrakesbrakes.com - if you return it Eamon is promising to collect it himself and play a gig in your front room.” [READ MORE]

Spin.com finally throws in their praise for Beatific Visions
“Having tripled their name to avoid confusion with the Philadelphia-based Brakes, this English band open their second album with a baptism-as-fight scene (”Hold Me in the River”). The pub stompers are as rowdy as ever, but they’re balanced here by laid-back ruminations on romance…” [READ MORE]

throws in props for the Merc show…
“While a venue that holds 300 people is considered, by New York standards, quite a hole in the wall. Nonetheless, it was a hole that was completely filled this past Saturday for the first night of brakesbrakesbrakes’ two night run at Mercury Lounge….” [READ MORE]

brakesbrakesbrakes This Weekend’s Hot Pick According to Time Out New York!

Friday, June 15th, 2007

“For many Americans, the idea of roving the country in a Winnebago brings up memories of torturous family vacations. To Eamon Hamilton, it’s “a dream come true.” The lead singer of Brighton, England’s Brakesbrakesbrakes has written two stellar albums that meld British-style postpunk urgency with elements of vintage Americana, and he expects the band’s current outing to spawn a third. After all, they’re touring the States in an RV. “When you’re making new music, it’s best to have a bit of an adventure,” he says….” [READ MORE]

In case you’re wondering about the RV…

Still… more praise for brakesbrakesbrakes!

“A hopeful sign, or at least a piece of luck. Finding the Bowie-esque British Sea Power and Doors-esque Electric Soft Parade wanting as life projects, Eamon Hamilton and the brothers Tom and Alex White have made their postpunk goof their main gig. Nine of the 11 songs are fast, and nine of the 11 songs are good — it’s as simple as that for once and suggests that some proggy post-er boys (I mean that in so many ways) are capable of returning to their 1977 roots. Not only that, a sweet young thing at the BBC has such a short memory or limited knowledge base that he called their country-flavored punk “original-sounding.” - Robert Christgau, MSN Music Consumer Guide
