World's Fair

With just a little over a week to go before the start of their tour with Teddy Thompson, the Grey Race are playing tomorrow, May 28, at New York’s Arlene’s Grocery, one of their favorite haunts.

Starting June 5, in Toronto, the Brooklyn (by way of New Zealand, California, and New York) trio will be making their way back home as not only Teddy Thompson’s support, but also as his backing band, in what should truly be a remarkable show.

Until then, here’s a video for their song “On the Chin,” which features none other than frontman Jon Darling’s sister Julia throwing the punches at him.

Say what? Yes, the original YouTube sensation, LonelyGirl15 crew has been a webisode series for a while… and they recently got into The Grey Race…

Things are looking up for The Grey Race, as Spin.com, who appropriately praised the band for proving themselves worthy at the World’s Fair CMJ showcase @ Bowery last week… “But while the venue was chiefly vacant, the stage was a different story — openers the Grey Race deserve an award for max sonic capacity, squeezing drummer Ethan Eubanks in a five-foot space amidst every subsequent acts’ equipment. It didn’t faze the recent Unfiltered Records signees as they made light of the dinky crowd, dropping clever lyrics about the meaning of the world (”On the Chin”) and giving between-song props to purveyors of sudsy good times, Miller and Bud. The trio are an odd mix of West Coast percussion (Eubanks), New York City rhythms (Jeff Hill/bass) and New Zealand wit (Jon Darling/vocals), that, partnered with some demonic pop duel harmonies, bring back those days of sweet album-dependent, late ’90s alt-rock a la the Wallflowers. But here, quite a few shades darker, as broadcasted on the set’s standout track, “Goodbye to You,” which could have been a Queens of the Stone Age B-side.”
