Eric Pulido of Midlake launches Cappulido Coffee

Friday, April 25th, 2008

cappulido.jpeg

Eric Pulido, guitarist of Midlake, has launched his very own brand of coffee! Cappulido Coffee was born in the Spring 2008 in the great land of Denton, TX, and features six different blends of fair traded coffee, each selling for around $10 a pop. With the purchase of Cappulido Coffee, you are giving aid directly back to farmers in developing countries, lending them the financial support necessary to continue developing an excellent product and compete in the world market.

Says Pulido, “Coffee has become a huge commodity in our culture today, and supplying it in a fair and quality manner was something I wanted to take part in. With Cappulido I am able to offer a coffee that I personally know supports the farmers that grow it, and provides the consumer with a freshly roasted, excellent bean.”

Cappulido’s distributor visits small estate farmers in several developing countries to achieve a firsthand understanding of the devastating impact of falling coffee prices and the resulting growing plight of farming families in developing countries.

The facts tell us that behind oil, coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world. On average, 108 million people in the US drink coffee daily. In developing countries, coffee farmers live in extreme poverty, bringing in an average of only $500 per year. Because the rules that govern trade favor rich countries, the potential to reduce poverty and support economic growth for poorer countries is being lost. As a result, most of these developing countries are dependent on outside aid for their survival. Cappulido is dedicated to helping farming families find relief and reach their full potential.

So why not support small estate coffee farmers and independent music and get caffeinated with Cappulido? There’s even a nifty monthly subscription option, where you can have a bag of beans drop on your doorstop at the top of every month.

New Midlake Interview In Magnet Magazine - Pick It Up!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Pick up the latest issue of Magnet for an extensive interview with our house favorites, Midlake!

Midlake Magnet

Excerpt…
“I really enjoy classical music and really love Renaissance paintings, just great works of art,” says Smith, his voice quickening. “All those things that help to fill your mind with things other than McDonald’s and all the advertisements and colognes and malls and everything going on these days that just makes you sick. I probably don’t deal with things the best way. I should get involved in politics, but a lot of it gets very frustrating to me. You can’t even debate with anyone because you don’t really know the facts, and neither does [the person you’re debating] … I just tend to retreat, I guess.”

True true, although known for being the seclusionary types, Midlake did also recently reveal their new album title to Rolling Stone…

Midlake Sound Opinions

“… When Jim and Greg were at SXSW last year they discovered one of their new favorite bands: Midlake. The Denton, TX quintet have been around for about 10 years, but Greg notes that the current Midlake is almost unrecognizable for the old one. He and Greg talk with 3/5 of the band (Eric Pulido, Eric Nichelson, Tim Smith) about how they came together and evolved. The lead singer Tim explains that OK Computer was integral to their development from a 30-minute jam band to what they are today. Psychedelic music fan Jim also wanted to ask what is in the water in Denton. Considering the size and location of the city, it’s surprising how many bands came out of there. Eric Pullido, the band’s rhythm guitarist, responds that the Denton community really supports art and music.” [READ MORE]

Left to his own devices, Tim Smith reveals plenty to the DC Express:
“I probably shouldn’t talk bad about us in an interview, but, yeah, I’m not satisfied,” Smith said. “I don’t look at us like we arrange our songs in the greatest way. I hear so many other bands, mostly bands like Jethro Tull or Yes that I’ve gotten into recently — prog-rock stuff — that just blows my mind; there’s no way I could do that. I don’t think we’re even in the same arena with those kind of guys.” [READ MORE]

Midlake Interview At The Onion AV Club

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Tim Smith of Midlake talks escapism, new album, rumors and indie cred at The Onion AV Club:

AVC: You’re very open about admitting you didn’t know much about indie music when you formed the band. Do you think that fresh approach was a benefit at all?

TS: No, I don’t think it was. I felt like I didn’t have my homework done. It took me a long time to catch up, and if I had started my homework when I was a teenager instead of when I was 23, then I wouldn’t have had to go through all the mess we’ve gone through in the last seven years to learn how to write a song. [Laughs.] I had to do lots of homework: Radiohead was a huge influence, and Björk. A lot of those big bands. Then you realize, “Oh, there are a ton of underground bands, too.” Then you get into Grandaddy and The Flaming Lips. I just hadn’t heard that stuff, but it was needed. [READ MORE]
