The Secret Machines Reveal Psychedelic New Video For “Atomic Heels”

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

A word of warning: the video for “Atomic Heels,” the first single off the Secret Machines’ 2008 self-titled record, is not for the faint-hearted. Directed by celebrated music photographer Brantley Gutierrez, it’s an entrancing look into the essence of the band. Haunting, super-saturated images of drums, guitars, and keyboards flash and flutter and spin, reflecting both the psychedelic nature of the Secret Machines’ music and the studio, the legendary Electric Lady, where the album was mixed. It’s a contemporary, cutting-edge graphic interpretation and homage to psychedelic music, and in itself reflects the driving, prog-influenced rhythms and universally approachable themes the trio have always encompassed and defined.

“You keep telling me everything’s got to be real,” frontman Brandon Curtis sings as figures swirl around him and clouded forms begin to take shape, bringing up the question that’s been asked from time immemorial: what is an actuality, and what is just an imagined apparition? And more, does it even matter?

The effect can be spellbinding at times, but there’s an intricate organization to the seeming chaos. Each layer of the video represents a track in “Atomic Heels”; they are laid on top of one another and mixed as if they were the parts of the song. When guitarist Phil Karnats launches into a solo, his instrument is brought to the front of the screen; when Curtis sings it’s his face that’s most clearly seen. The music ends in a frenzy, but as the video closes it’s just Curtis in front of his keyboards, alone. With up to eight layers at any given point, the video can be hypnotizingly intense, but the more times it’s watched, the correspondence between the sonic and visual elements becomes even more apparent, and the more the ingenuity of the completed piece reveals itself. It’s a video unlike any others out there, but, then again, it’s the Secret Machines: what more could you expect?

World’s Fair Year-End Round-Up!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

It may only be mid-November, but if you’re one of those who does best-of lists, you’ve probably already started thinking about everything that’s come out. World’s Fair has had a big year in 2008, with releases from all our labels. Here they are, in chronological order.

British Sea Power: Do You Like Rock Music (Rough Trade)
British Sea Power“Listening is like riding a beast; BSP’s unvarnished, delightfully meandering anthems sound larger than life. Bring on foliage and military uniforms, lads, we’re prepared to salute…” - The Los Angeles Times, Buzz Bands

“The glorious sound of a unique band going for broke….” - The Guardian (4/5 stars)

The Autumns: Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys (Bella Union)
The Autumns“Los Angeles’ the Autumns have been a reliable source of brooding, dreamy pop since 1994, appealing to fans of shoegazers like Cocteau Twins and goth titans the Cure. For their fourth full-length, founders Matthew Kelly and Frankie Koroshec have sharpened their teeth and made some decidedly authentic noise. ‘Boys’ signals newfound aggression for these underground darlings.” - Chicago Sun Times

“Succulent dream pop collides with fast and racy indie rock.” – Exclaim

Daptone 7“Few top Brooklyn’s R&B champs Daptone Records, which compiles the cream of its DJ-friendly 45s for a second volume of the label’s Singles Collection. The reverb is delicious and soulful (Lee Fields’ ‘Could Have Been’), the guitars snarl (The Mighty Imperials’ ‘The Matador’) and everything grooves.” - RELIX

“From start to finish, this compilation of rarities represents first-rate soul music.” - UR Chicago (4.5/5)

The Secret Machines

The Secret Machines, who are currently on the road to support their latest album, the self-titled Secret Machines, will be wrapping up their US & Canadian tour next month playing in front of a hometown crowd at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on Nov 18, after which they will be joining Oasis as special guests on their upcoming concerts in Mexico. The Secret Machines are renowned for creating atmospheric stage shows featuring massive soundscapes that deliver blistering drum-and-bass epics of seismic proportion alongside hypnotic riffs that evoke and transcend the realms of indie prog psychedelia.

Nov 26 - Mexico City @ Sports Palace
Nov 28 - Guadalajara @ Arena VFG
Nov 29 - Monterrey @ Arena Monterrey

The last time the Dallas-via-New-York trio shared a stage with the British rockers was in 2005 in Spain, Germany and the Milton Keynes Bowl in the UK. This will mark the Secret Machines’ second visit to Mexico, following their 2006 performances as the opening band for the Mexican leg of U2’s Vertigo tour.

Josh Garza, the band’s dynamic drummer, voiced his anticipation of the upcoming event, saying “We’re really excited about this opportunity to share a stage with Oasis again, and are very grateful to them for choosing us for this special bill. It was great the last time we played with them, and will be even better this time. Most of all, we’re really looking forward to being in Mexico and playing to our Mexican fans.”

The Secret Machines Head West

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Secret Machines have finished up their East Coast dates and are just about to start the next leg of their North American tour, stopping by Chicago (tonight!), Madison, Denver, Aspen, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver with the Dears.

The Machines have a band-new stage set-up for the tour, “a Naum Gabo-inspired romboid structure surfaced with gauze and punctuated with radiating tensioned cables” designed by Es Devlin, the same woman who provided Kanye West with his set for his Touch the Sky tour. The LA Times recently talked to frontman Brandon Curtis about the design, declaring that “it’s probably going to absolutely fry your brain’s pleasure centers.” Brandon also explained some of his thoughts behind it all.

“I always write music that exists inside a visual context, and this imagery we’ve chosen is on our album cover and our website…I always perform with my eyes closed imagining an image, and with this tour I can open them and it’s a slap in the face, like, ‘Oh, you’re still here.’ “

The show has been getting a great reception, too. Quarterlife Party was there in DC (and took some great pictures of the set) and Evil Monito called the New York show “a liberating and open sonic landscape.”

The GarageBand remix contest for “Atomic Heels” is still underway for another week. Download the stems and send in your submission here.

The Secret Machines Bring Innovative Set Design on Upcoming Tour (+ new album out today!)

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

The Secret Machines’ brand-new record, Secret Machines, is out today, October 14, on their own label, TSM Recordings. This is the trio’s third full-length and first on TSM, and also marks the first in a series of strong initiatives that continue to define their status as cutting-edge, visionary artists.

A show at the 9:30 Club in DC this Thursday kicks off the Secret Machines’ fall North American promo tour. Following in the tradition of their trademark staging on previous tours, it looks like concert-goers are in for a treat this time around, as well.

The band has just unveiled the minimalist approach behind their new set design, revealing a concept that is more theatrical in nature than in the intense rock lighting effects they are known for. Brandon Curtis took an unconventional approach when he enlisted the conceptual talents of one of Europe’s premiere award-winning set designers, Es Devlin, the same woman who hip-hop mogul Kanye West turned to for his space-themed Touch the Sky tour last year. Ms. Devlin, who also designed the set and costumes for Philip Glass’s chamber opera Orphee as well as Sally Potter’s extravagant film production of Carmen, was kind enough to give us her first-hand perspective on why she decided to collaborate with the Secret Machines, and how she envisions this stage set enhancing their performance.

“I am a fan of the Secret Machines’ work, having seen their Brighton performance online on the BBC, I was impressed by how committed they are to the visual expression of their music. There was a purity of idea to their lighting, practically the entire show was backlit with them in silhouette. I met Brandon and Josh in NYC while I was working on a film with Sally Potter and also on Kanye West’s tour, and we immediately shared a language of image and music and by the end of the conversation the show was effectively designed.

“The visual elements are a direct instinctive response to the qualities of the music. The band will be caught within a Naum Gabo-inspired romboid structure surfaced with gauze and punctuated with radiating tensioned cables which will catch the light in a more lyrical way than a pure saturated block of back light - we might combine them and counterpoint them with pure blocks of backlight too. What the fans see will be a visual expression and counterpoint to what they hear allowing them the space to project their own interpretation of the music and the courage to intensify it.”

In their latest issue, Blender said of Secret Machines, “If David Lynch were to direct a remake of the Victorian romance Wuthering Heights, he wouldn’t need to commission a soundtrack: Secret Machines have recorded it…On ‘Have I Run Out,’ theatrical kettledrums and tense strings introduce a beautiful sense of dreamy anguish and ‘The Walls Are Starting to Crack’ showcases he power of their new identity as apocalypse-heralding romantics…”

while SPIN writes, “Adding electronic gurgles to heavy, prog-rock power chords…Secret Machines recalls Rush and Black Sabbath at one end of the sonic spectrum (’The Fire Is Waiting’) and David Bowie’s spazzier, punk-era edge at the other (’Atomic Heels’). In between those far-flung atmospheric poles, the band proves they’re more than the sum of their seamless influences…”

Social Machines: The Secret Machines Announce GarageBand Remix

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Share in the creative process! Remix “Atomic Heels,” the first single from the Secret Machines’ upcoming full-length, Secret Machines, through an exclusive contest on the band’s new social network, thesecretmachines.com.

“ATOMIC PURGATORY!” exclaims Brandon Curtis, the vocalist/ keyboardist/bass player and principal songwriter behind the Secret Machines. The psychedelic New York trio’s founding member has just come out of self-imposed exile after being isolated in a 6 x 6-foot room at Electric Lady Studios for the last 10 days, while he used Apple Loops to tackle the preparation of stems for the upcoming “Atomic Heels” Remix Contest for GarageBand.

This is the first time the Secret Machines have made their music available as raw files, meaning that what was once a heavily guarded secret of sonic alchemy is now essentially up for grabs and encouraged freely for the world to mangle. “To be honest, at first I didn’t really grasp why we would want to do this, Secret Machines weren’t initially on the bandwagon of high-profile remix enthusiasts,” admits Curtis. “For us right now the most important priority is connecting with our fans. To celebrate the release of our first single, “Atomic Heels,” we decided that there was no better gift than to let them explore and experiment with our music – have them feel the same excitement we first felt when we laid down the tracks for this song at New York’s Magic Shop Studios. So yes, it’s about technology, but it’s also about embracing how this technology impacts us artistically, by allowing us to make our music available for the first time in an interactive way. As the traditional label industry keeps changing, and the sale of recorded music keeps dwindling, we’re thrilled to be among a growing number of artists that now provide our fans with a dynamic digital means to distribute our music, for free, among themselves. We can’t wait to hear what they come up with.”

The remix contest runs from October 14 through November 2, when the Secret Machines will be announcing the winner online, the day before their performance at The Independent in San Francisco. Contest prizes include a pre-loaded Nano Chromatic featuring the new album and video, as well as a limited edition EP issued on TSM Recordings, which will include the winning remix and other exclusive tracks. The Secret Machines Release New Album Track, “Atomic Heels,” on SPIN.com!

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The Secret Machines

The Secret Machines, quickly approaching the upcoming release of a new album and an accompanying tour, have just leaked the first track off the new record, with help from SPIN.com.

“Atomic Heels,” off Secret Machines (their third full-length and first on their own label, TSM Recordings), is a melodically-driven, hook-laden, nicely expansive song, a “pulsating and eerie first single, dripping in layers of sonic minutiae and — uncharacteristically — flaunting a radio-friendly 3:40 playtime.”

(The download follows a 30-second sneak preview streaming leak courtesy of USA Today.)

The band also recently announced a North American tour, and it is in fact their live show that has helped to build them such a stellar reputation among fans and critics alike.

The Secret Machines Announce Fall Tour

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The Secret Machines

After a run of select dates this summer, including a stop at this year’s All Points West Festival, New York City’s The Secret Machines will be hitting the road in the fall in support of their new album, entitled Secret Machines. The album will be released on October 14th on their own label, TSM Recordings, through World’s Fair Label Group. The Dears will be joining the tour in the Midwest through the West Coast and Small Sins will provide support on the Canadian dates.

Secret Machines, recorded in the band’s adopted home of New York City and produced by the band and Brandon Mason, is a sonic tour de force, full of expansive instrumental swells and psychedelic sounds. From the driving beat of opener and first single “Atomic Heels” to the steady drone of “The Fire Is Waiting,” Secret Machines sees the band mapping out new musical terrain while retaining the elements that have made them favorites amongst music fans since the release of their first album, Now Here Is Nowhere, in 2004.

The Secret Machine’s live show — whether with an extensive stage production or just the 3 core members of Brandon Curtis, Josh Garza, and Phil Karnats with a sparse stage set up — is always an impressive sonic experience taking the listener on one hell of an aural journey.

“…in a live setting the sound is hypnotic with metallic intensity, the chilling splendor rendered heavier and dirtier. The tightly coiled tension will suddenly drop the floor out from under you, revealing crash sites on psychedelic vistas, and it’s these stomach plunging moments that draw you away from the crowd and into your head.” — Jambase.com

The Secret Machines Release Exclusive New Non-Album Track

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

The Secret Machines

On “Dreaming of Dreaming,” an exclusive non-album track from New York’s the Secret Machines, the band creates a space in which both melody and experimentation have equal weight. The song, the first new music since 2006’s Ten Silver Drops is available for download now — an early taste of everything to come.

Hear it here:
“Dreaming of Dreaming” (exclusive, new non-album track)

The track begins with Josh Garza’s tight, concise drumming, holding the place for the guitars that layer and crescendo until the song breaks and Brandon Curtis starts to sing, his voice careful but on the edge of longing. “I’m dreaming, we’re dreaming, we’re way past believing/I caught a glimpse it was all a lie” he confesses, acknowledging, but not resigning to, what he’s discovered.

If Garza’s drums are the backbone, then Phil Karnat’s guitars are the ribs and nerves, enveloping the song in contained dissonance, giving it a sense of shape and heft. And it’s only at the end, when he falls into a pattern, that Garza allows himself to expand. The song explodes, and with each member closely attuned to rest of the band, responding to the others’ movements, “Dreaming of Dreaming” achieves that rare balance of spontaneity and control. This is the Secret Machines at their best: accessible yet intelligent, meandering yet focused, and wholly compelling.

The all-knowing RCRD LBL premiered the song earlier this morning, saying, “this song sounds like everything we ever loved about the Secret Machines (read: losing braincells sonically), building and building over eight minutes until even the drums have slap-back delay on them and the whole thing sounds like the Hale-Bop comet crashing into the Garden of Eden.
