World's Fair

Still basking in the success of his most recent album, Eleventh Hour, Del the Funky Homosapien is setting off a yet another tour, this time hitting much of the festival circuit, with stops at Monolith, Bumbershoot, Austin City Limits and plenty of others.

Del was recently featured in Pitchfork’s guest list column, where he talked about his favorite record stores, Rock of Love, and his own love of Parliament-Funkadelic:

“I was watching a Parliament show. It was in 1972. And of course, that was off the hook… George Clinton was changing costumes throughout the set. He come out as Starchild, Dr. Funklestein…it’s a trip. You know what? I kind of liked Bootsy [Collins]’s show a little better. He got a little more continuity to his stage goings-on. Like it was a little more unified and goofy. Parliament’s all over the place.”

Del’s set may not feature all the over-the-top theatrics of a P-Funk production, but he certainly knows how to put on a fantastic live show. And this summer there are plenty of chances to see that in action.

They’re currently at work on a new album, which, according to Del, is nearly finished. “We want to add some polish and shine instead of just dumping it out there,” he says. “Everybody on it — damn near everybody on damn near every song.” This is not surprising, considering the tightly knit group has been making music together since the early ’90s. YRB: I understand that you did a lot of the production on your own this time around. what made you want to do that? What were the benefits and disadvantages?
Del: The disadvantage is that it takes hella work. If I had somebody else do the production, I could just sneak back and do the rap. Now I got to listen to all of this stuff, mix it and play quality control. I’m doing that all myself, but I studied for a while to be able to do that. I studied music theory and songwriting so I wouldn’t have to go to anybody for help… - YRB
