Rob Sonic Reviewed On Pitchfork Plus Def Jux Lines Up Sonic Sum Release

Friday, January 25th, 2008

“… Sabotage Gigante has been said to be Sonic’s political album, at least in a more wide-ranging and universal way than Telicatessen’s the-personal-is-political themes, but there are so many generalities, abstractions, reappropriated slogans, moments of quadruplespeak, and pseudo-non-sequitur asides that much of the listener’s time between headphones is spent trying to untangle it all….” - Pitchfork [READ MORE]

They forgot to mention that boom bap, but whatever, that’s ok. its cool… Rob Sonic just don’t quit - bringing back his fabled “Radiohead of Hip Hop” (CMJ) a.k.a. Sonic Sum troupe via Def Jux!

From the bio…
Definitive Jux is proud to present Sonic Sum’s Films, their long-awaited follow up LP to 2000’s critically-acclaimed debut The Sanity Annex. Films is a glimpse of why this Bronx-based foursome have achieved cult status amongst the indie/underground cognoscenti worldwide. Emerging from NYC’s Ozone collective (Company Flow, Anti Pop, Mike Ladd, Saul Williams, El-P), Sonic Sum’s unique brand of hip hop reaches into the world of indie rock and comes up with something completely new. Featuring a DJ, a DJ/keyboardist, a bass player and the outsized talents of frontman/producer (& Def Jux solo artist) Rob Sonic. The album was originally released exclusively in Japan on Tri-Eight Recordings. El-P and Def Jux decided that it was time for the US fan base to finally have access to this hidden gem, Films embodies a sound whose time has finally come….

Aesop Rock Myspace Secret show

Aesop writes on his blog… “… thanks everyone for coming out to the free show in brooklyn! shit was very very fun. way more intimate than the irving show. irving is great, but a smaller venue is sometimes more excotomg. unfortunately i realize that meant a lot of people couldn’t get in, but i guess thats the downside of a free show at such a venue. i cant tell you how my i appreciate motherfuckers waiting out in the cold. if i could’ve brought you all in for scones and cocoa i would have, but scones are so wack and i had no cocoa….” [READ MORE]

Rob Sonic Interview At Suicide Girls!

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

“For some, every waking day is one blue or red pill closer to living in a George Orwell-esque dystopic nightmare. For others, we’re already there, as artists trying to create in a world that’s erased the lines between fiction and nonfiction, and as Rob Sonic might say, a world where the future has become nothing but a drug we kick. It might sound a bit cryptic but such are the ideas that Definitive Jux emcee Rob Sonic explores on his latest album, Sabotage Gigante, with all with the fervor of an lucid-dreaming insomniac at an post-apocalyptic yard sale. But even at his most dizzying, there’s a method to Sonic’s madness — a rhyme to his reason, so to speak — and the Bronx based emcee hits home with a galvanized clarity lacking in other of today’s smoke and mirror hip hop acts.

SuicideGirls caught up with Rob Sonic in Los Angeles, in a makeshift bunker beneath the Henry Fonda Theater, surrounded by cold cuts and warm beer, to talk about Sabotage Gigante, out now on Definitive Jux Records…” - Suicide Girls [READ MORE]

SG: It’s been a pretty good year for Def Jux. The label has released some very strong records — El-P’s, Aesop’s, your’s …

RS: It has been [a good year]. It’s been pretty amazing to see the level and the quality of the work that’s been coming out.

SG: You didn’t get stressed out or nervous at all, like, “Oh fuck man, my label mates are killing it.”

RS: I had heard [El-P and Aesop's records] already in stages. So I knew already. It’s one of those things, when you hear that stuff in those early stages and you know it’s going to be that powerful, you just say, “Okay, I’m not that good. So I’m going to go ahead and do to what I know how to do and stick to my guns because they’re already leaps and bounds ahead of me, so whatever.” Suicide Girls [READ MORE]

Rob Sonic - KEXP Song Of The Day, Interview On Philaflava

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Rob Sonic’s “Brand New Vandals” was KEXP’s Song Of The Day on Tuesday this week!

Read a recent interview with Rob @ Philaflava!

“How does one describe perfection in human form? Some would say Michaelango’s statue of Michael is true perfection, but those people never met one Rob Sonic or Rob Sonique as he is called in small Parisian town he grew up in. Rob has gone on to master the art of the raps and the producings which is evident on his new record Sabotage Gigante now available from on Definitive Jux records.” - Philaflava [READ MORE]

Y’all might have read about Aesop’s dedication to “practice, practice, practice” in reference to the lengthy rehearsals he goes thru to prepare for his hella tight live shows… Well, we got a hold of some rehearsal tapes that, um, might suggest more tomfoolery than you might have expected! (or if you watched Rob throwing ninja stars @ MTV then here’s more confirmation of just what you’d expect!)
