Sharon Jones Has Yet Another Knock-Out Performance at Coachella

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

SJDK_Coachella
No one can ever accuse Sharon Jones of being inconsistent or unreliable. Time and time again her energy, talent, and personality have been lauded by critics and fans alike, and her powerful performance at this year’s Coachella only helped solidify claims that she does in fact, “inspire.” (Thanks to the Wired blog for the great photo!)

Because during their Friday night set, Sharon and her Dap-Kings let nobody down, putting on a rock-solid, energetic, and very, very soulful show that had one EW critic calling it “among the best I’ve seen in my life,” and leading USA Today to assert that she was “this year’s successor to Amy Winehouse” (though we all already know that Amy’s happily admitted inspiration from Ms. Jones herself).

These kind words, however, are just a few of the many praises Sharon received at Coachella: Stereogum, Pitchfork, the L.A. Times, Tegan Quin from Tegan and Sara, and Variety, among many others, all had great things to say about her, as well.

Check out a short clip of the set. (Courtesy of Buzznet.)

In more exciting news, take a look at the brand new video for “Tell Me,” which premiered on AOL Spinner today!

In case you haven’t seen what everyone’s been raving about, or you haven’t gotten enough, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings will continue to wow the nation throughout the summer, including at stops at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and the Central Park Summerstage.

Tiny Masters of Today featured in the Daily News + Summer Festival Dates Announced

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

The New York Daily News featured Tiny Masters of Today this week… “It’s a new phenomenon of these really excellent musicians being so young,” said Suzanne Youngerman, who curates BAM programs for youth. “So many come from Brooklyn - it’s the epicenter of creativity for these kid bands.” Michael Palms, co-owner of the club Southpaw in Park Slope, gives bands like Tiny Masters a regular venue. “They have the rock aesthetic in control,” Palms said. “They write interesting songs about angst and rejecting pop culture, which is essentially what rock music is really all about.” [read the full article here]

Eric Pulido of Midlake launches Cappulido Coffee

Friday, April 25th, 2008

cappulido.jpeg

Eric Pulido, guitarist of Midlake, has launched his very own brand of coffee! Cappulido Coffee was born in the Spring 2008 in the great land of Denton, TX, and features six different blends of fair traded coffee, each selling for around $10 a pop. With the purchase of Cappulido Coffee, you are giving aid directly back to farmers in developing countries, lending them the financial support necessary to continue developing an excellent product and compete in the world market.

Says Pulido, “Coffee has become a huge commodity in our culture today, and supplying it in a fair and quality manner was something I wanted to take part in. With Cappulido I am able to offer a coffee that I personally know supports the farmers that grow it, and provides the consumer with a freshly roasted, excellent bean.”

Cappulido’s distributor visits small estate farmers in several developing countries to achieve a firsthand understanding of the devastating impact of falling coffee prices and the resulting growing plight of farming families in developing countries.

The facts tell us that behind oil, coffee is the second largest traded commodity in the world. On average, 108 million people in the US drink coffee daily. In developing countries, coffee farmers live in extreme poverty, bringing in an average of only $500 per year. Because the rules that govern trade favor rich countries, the potential to reduce poverty and support economic growth for poorer countries is being lost. As a result, most of these developing countries are dependent on outside aid for their survival. Cappulido is dedicated to helping farming families find relief and reach their full potential.

So why not support small estate coffee farmers and independent music and get caffeinated with Cappulido? There’s even a nifty monthly subscription option, where you can have a bag of beans drop on your doorstop at the top of every month.

For more info, visit the Cappulido site.

The guys continue to work audiences into a frenzy with their raucous energy and onstage antics… here are PHOTOS c/o AUSTINIST.

“If Arcade Fire merely teases, British Sea Power hits you in the mouth; Rock Music is moody but lacks debilitating melodrama. Similar bands such as Doves and Arcade Fire seem to be playing from some higher plane, but British Sea Power’s sound rises from a subterranean morass of soil, blood and distortion, enabling them to connect with their audience on a truly visceral level.” - [read more @ Dallas Observer]

“For the first time catching them live, I was immediately surprised and ultimately pleased with their throwback look. I knew they were an intelligent, literate group but to carry on with such an outward aesthetic really warmed my heart… British Sea Power showed up and performed with a zest mine eyes hadn’t seen in quite some time…” [see the full recap @ TheTripwire.com]

The Autumns drop Fake Noise From a Box of Toys — out now on Bella Union!

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

World’s Fair is thrilled to uncover the latest gem from The Autumns, in stores on Bella Union today… Fake Noise From a Box of Toys is The Autumn’s 6th release. See below for a remix treat, compliments of Le Petit Mort.

“Already conquering the British press, the equal parts math and dance rock mongers known as the Autumns will be hungrily gobbled up once their latest offering, Fake Noise, ventures onto North American soil. Although the band are based in L.A., they scored a deal with the UK’s Bella Union (the Dears, Explosions in the Sky) and listening to their glorious sixth album leaves no question as to why. Sparkling with influences from all across the musical spectrum, at any given moment you can hear vibrant, Queen-like polyphony or eloquent Death Cab for Cutie-esque simplicity in the soft vocals. From beginning to end, the Autumns continue to impress with their stash of unique tunes. “Uncle Slim” captures their schizophrenic nature as they easily switch between cute “la-dee-dahs” and loud, crashing rock. Vocalist Matthew Kelley sounds like Morrissey doing a Shins cover on the catchy “Only Young.” They have managed to find a medium where succulent dream pop collides with fast and racy indie rock. Usually sitting on the fence between the two distinct genres makes for a confusing and frustrating sound but in the case of the Autumns, they comfortably straddle the fence and have mastered the balance so well that it’s finally paying off.” as reviewed on EXCLAIM

“This 50-second introduction to the dream-pop outfit’s new Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys wastes no time in demonstrating the Autumns’ strengths: mastering the kind of Kevin Shields-inspired cacophony out of which a delectable melody or two sticks its head like a dolphin in the ocean… the arena-worthy vulgarity of “Take this, you’ll be mine/Love” deserves the widescreen treatment—a practical consideration, not an aesthetic one.” PAPER THIN WALLS reviews “Turning Strangers Into Friends And Friends Into Customers”…

“Los Angeles’ the Autumns have been a reliable source of brooding, dreamy pop since 1994, appealing to fans of shoegazers like Cocteau Twins and goth titans the Cure. For their fourth full-length, founders Matthew Kelly and Frankie Koroshec have sharpened their teeth and made some decidedly authentic noise. “Boys” signals newfound aggression for these underground darlings.” - CHICAGO SUN TIMES review [read in full here]

Enjoy as Le Petit Mort dance up The Autumns’ “Killer In Drag” into a spectacular electro-licious treat.

The Postmarks Release #4 In “By The Numbers” Exclusively @ eMusic

Monday, April 14th, 2008

postmarksThe Postmarks - “OX4″ [FREE DOWNLOAD @ EMUSIC]
The Postmarks’ Christopher Moll tells us, “The original by Ride is a favorite in that it tugs on multiple emotional strings. The music has this hugeness about it that seems to swim in the beauty and openness of being on the road (i.e. touring). Lyrically, it’s a little bit of: be careful what you wish for. While there is a certain freedom one has on the road, it’s easy to get lost in that. Add a touch of homesickness and there you go.”

Upcoming shows for the Postmarks in the home-state…
