Flaming Lips Make Peace With Death For Halloween

“Oklahoma Gazette invited resident Okie eccentrics the Flaming Lips to participate in its annual “Ghouls Gone Wild” Halloween parade, the Lips enlisted their biggest fans to join the March Of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons–a “spectacle celebrating the mysterious, the supernatural, and the otherworldly,” according to the band’s recruitment email.” - Yahoo Music

“As Spinner previously reported, the Flaming Lips will lead 1,000 volunteers in a “March of the Thousand Flaming Skeletons” as part of the annual Halloween parade in Oklahoma City this Friday. Spinner recently caught up with leading Lip and ringmaster Wayne Coyne as he made preparations. “A lot of Halloween things end up being dumbed-down,” Coyne tells Spinner. “We’re trying to make it an adult experience and just kind of get to a little more of the ‘death’ aspect of it.” - AOL Spinner [READ MORE]

NewsOK: You could be living anywhere you want, but you’ve chosen to stay in Oklahoma and you’ve even chosen to remain pretty much in the neighborhood where you grew up… Why did you choose to stay here?

Coyne: Well, early on we didn’t really make any of those choices. We were just being who we really were, which I think is the only way you can do it. I was 22 when we put out our first record and began this life as The Flaming Lips. There’s no way I could have looked ahead 25 years and thought “staying in Oklahoma is going to be one of the most unique things about us.” It was more about who you were and your ideas and the music you made…. The Flaming Lips are putting the finishing touches on a live DVD, “UFOs at the Zoo,” due in July via Warner Bros. The project was filmed last September in the group’s Oklahoma City hometown, at an amphitheatre within the grounds of the city zoo. [READ MORE]
