The Autumns drop Fake Noise From a Box of Toys — out now on Bella Union!

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

World’s Fair is thrilled to uncover the latest gem from The Autumns, in stores on Bella Union today… Fake Noise From a Box of Toys is The Autumn’s 6th release. See below for a remix treat, compliments of Le Petit Mort.

“Already conquering the British press, the equal parts math and dance rock mongers known as the Autumns will be hungrily gobbled up once their latest offering, Fake Noise, ventures onto North American soil. Although the band are based in L.A., they scored a deal with the UK’s Bella Union (the Dears, Explosions in the Sky) and listening to their glorious sixth album leaves no question as to why. Sparkling with influences from all across the musical spectrum, at any given moment you can hear vibrant, Queen-like polyphony or eloquent Death Cab for Cutie-esque simplicity in the soft vocals. From beginning to end, the Autumns continue to impress with their stash of unique tunes. “Uncle Slim” captures their schizophrenic nature as they easily switch between cute “la-dee-dahs” and loud, crashing rock. Vocalist Matthew Kelley sounds like Morrissey doing a Shins cover on the catchy “Only Young.” They have managed to find a medium where succulent dream pop collides with fast and racy indie rock. Usually sitting on the fence between the two distinct genres makes for a confusing and frustrating sound but in the case of the Autumns, they comfortably straddle the fence and have mastered the balance so well that it’s finally paying off.” as reviewed on EXCLAIM

“This 50-second introduction to the dream-pop outfit’s new Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys wastes no time in demonstrating the Autumns’ strengths: mastering the kind of Kevin Shields-inspired cacophony out of which a delectable melody or two sticks its head like a dolphin in the ocean… the arena-worthy vulgarity of “Take this, you’ll be mine/Love” deserves the widescreen treatment—a practical consideration, not an aesthetic one.” PAPER THIN WALLS reviews “Turning Strangers Into Friends And Friends Into Customers”…

“Los Angeles’ the Autumns have been a reliable source of brooding, dreamy pop since 1994, appealing to fans of shoegazers like Cocteau Twins and goth titans the Cure. For their fourth full-length, founders Matthew Kelly and Frankie Koroshec have sharpened their teeth and made some decidedly authentic noise. “Boys” signals newfound aggression for these underground darlings.” - CHICAGO SUN TIMES review [read in full here]

Enjoy as Le Petit Mort dance up The Autumns’ “Killer In Drag” into a spectacular electro-licious treat.

Introducing Bella Union’s Peter Von Poehl And “The Story Of The Impossible”

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Bella Union & World’s Fair are proud to present “Going to Where the Tea Trees Are”, the outstanding debut album by Peter von Poehl - ex-Bertrand Burgalat cohort who is currently supporting label-mate Stephanie Dosen on tour in UK. Enjoy this introductory track from the album, release date June 10th…

Peter Von Poehl - “The Story Of The Impossible” [DOWNLOAD]

Bio:

Songs can be like public transportation for all. They take us places. But some suddenly run off well worn rails, heading for an unexpected adventure. This is what happened with “Going to Where the Tea Trees Are”, a modest 45 (yes, a 45) recorded by a little known Swede, Peter von Poehl. A cosy song which sounds like it was recorded in an igloo, it began to get play on French radio last year. Sudden developments followed; listeners bombarded the radio switchboard for information; an influential L.A. producer being the next to succumb; then sales flowing through Peter’s website. Word of mouth and blog to blog, a persistent and affectionate rumour about the single evolved into something of a contemporary French legend.

Today, now that this semi-famous song has given its name to Peter von Poehl’s debut album; now that its infectious charm is about to increase his rapidly-growing fanbase; now, then, it’s time to know more about this intriguing gentleman, Swedish by his mother and German by his father.

Peter Von Poehl

Recorded partially in the Swedish countryside and in Peter’s Berlin apartment, “Going to where…” shows no signs of the shiny shell or overblown workings of many pop productions. Instead, the music took advantage of the basic surroundings it was recorded in to emerge as a lively, vibrant recording, loaded with inspiration.

Between folk ballads and pocket symphonies basking in boreal luminosity, the 12 songs form an album throbbing with so many shapes and colours, several listens are necessary to grasp its full effect. A continually surprising record, yet thanks to Peter’s milky voice, quickly familiar. Unashamedly contemplative on “Going to Where the Tea Trees are”; playful and dancing on “Global Conspiracy”; mesmerising on the magnificent “Story of the Impossible” and meditative on “Tooth Fairy”, Peter gives us as many faces as musical facets, without ever giving the impression of being stretched too thin, too widely. There’s a reason for this, because behind the fragmented prism of these first offerings, there’s a vague unity to all the songs, that is departure, wandering, strolling, and belonging. Threaded through everything is that troubling notion of being a foreigner in your country and feeling adrift in your own home, as if you could be anywhere. But this modern troubadour, new wave folk singer of ingenious and moving songs isn’t going anywhere. Peter von Poehl will be with us for a long while to come.

New Midlake Interview In Magnet Magazine - Pick It Up!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Pick up the latest issue of Magnet for an extensive interview with our house favorites, Midlake!

Midlake Magnet

Excerpt…
“I really enjoy classical music and really love Renaissance paintings, just great works of art,” says Smith, his voice quickening. “All those things that help to fill your mind with things other than McDonald’s and all the advertisements and colognes and malls and everything going on these days that just makes you sick. I probably don’t deal with things the best way. I should get involved in politics, but a lot of it gets very frustrating to me. You can’t even debate with anyone because you don’t really know the facts, and neither does [the person you’re debating] … I just tend to retreat, I guess.”

True true, although known for being the seclusionary types, Midlake did also recently reveal their new album title to Rolling Stone…

The Autumns Build Buzz Stateside w/ Kudos @ LA Times & Filter Mag

Monday, January 28th, 2008

“When the band played a run of dates last May at Spaceland, its new material proved very challenging — having moved beyond by-the-playbook dreampop and shoegaze, the Autumns’ furious rhythms and interwoven guitars demanded more than casual attention…” - LA Times - Buzz Bands [READ MORE]

“Always the bridesmaids but never the bride, LA’s The Autumns have garnered a cult following thanks to some stellar albums, but somehow never quite achieved the mainstream success afforded to similar bands. However, their latest album Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys, released on April 15th via Bella Union Records should prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with…. Don’t believe us? Check out “Boys” from the album; it’s angular, it’s energetic and it’s everything that other bands wish they were. The guitars take their sonic textures from shoegaze but their pacing from grunge, and mixed with the peppy drums and the lead singers Buckley-esque vocals, it’s clear that now is The Autumns’ time…” - Filter Mag [READ MORE]

The Autumns

“All dressed in black, the California quintet begin with “Clem”, heavy rock guitars and impassioned vocals akin to their American predecessors Weezer. Elsewhere, dark atmospheric driving guitar riffs combine with free drumming from their jazz influenced drummer Steve Elkins. Singer Matthew Kelly’s unfaltering falsetto vocals are beautiful, an amalgam of Muse’s Matt Bellamy and Jeff Buckley. In “The End” he displays his best Buckleyesque vocals soaring over delicate guitar picking, atmospheric cymbals and harmonising adding to the devastating effect. The band’s single “Boys”, from their new album Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys, does what The Autumns do best – blending Kelly’s intoxicating vocals with shoegazing and powerful guitars to produce a majestic indie rock anthem worthy of Muse…” - The Independent UK [READ MORE]

“It will be called The Courage Of Others,” reports singer Tim Smith…. “We’ve been going in at 8a.m. and we’re done by 5,” says Smith, whose songwriting has been influenced, most recently, by No Other, the mysterioso 1974 solo gem from Gene Clark of the Byrds. “We were jammin’pretty hard this morning, ” Smith says. “We said to ourselves - No other rock band does this at 9:30 in the morning..!” - Midlake @ Rolling Stone

We can’t wait to hear it! Until then, we enjoy the classic…

The Autumns Praised On UK Release Plus Crib Notes For The Unacquainted

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

“Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys”, the 6th studio effort by The Autumns, their 2nd for Bella Union, coming out for US listeners April 15th, is already receiving praise across the pond…

“A new-found, syncopated restlessness… classic” - 4stars, MOJO

“An alien beauty… In an overcrowded field, they’ve managed to avoid sounding quite like any of their rivals…” - Uncut

“Colossal… An enchanting cacophony” - The Fly UK

“Rock on a grand scale… [They'll] have you eating out of their hands” - 4 stars, Music OMH [READ MORE]

“Math rock meets dream pop head on… and what a curious but glorious collision it is… one highly impressive album” - 4 stars, CLICK MUSIC [READ MORE]

“In fact, the album is downright schizophrenic at times. Luscious harmonies, twinkling keyboards and soaring melodies rub shoulders with distressingly abrasive feedback and unexpectedly harsh chord changes, so just as you’re blissfully drifting off, you’re suddenly jerked back into consciousness and hastily wiping the dribble off your chin…” - Gigwise [READ MORE]

Autumns

From the bio…
“… After touring the record with label-mates The Dears, the band was eager to return to the writing process and intent on departing from the languorous quality of its earlier material in favour of a sharper and more immediate sound. It is not surprising that The Autumns’ forthcoming album - Fake Noise From a Box of Toys - is a radical departure from their earlier work. The songs slice and dice with a frenzied precision, their pummelling pace interrupted only sparingly by the more serene fare of Autumns previous sound. And yet the latter emerge all the more lovely from the record’s generally rough relief…” [READ MORE]

Autumns

Now… what you won’t read in the bio:

1. Some of us may recognize The Autumns’ frontman Matthew Kelly as “the Wolf” from shape-shifting indie cult favorites The Sound Of Animals Fighting

2. The Autumns are featured alongside all the greats (including Bella Union founder Simon Raymonde) in this upcoming documentary of the Shoegaze genre

3. Speaking of docs, we’re also informed that the the multi-talented Steve Elkins, on drumming duties for The Autumns, is also currently developing a documentary on genre-deying music that features interviews and performances with the likes of Sonic Youth, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Bob Ostertag, and Nels Cline… More as the story develops!

What other surprises do The Autumns hold in store? Listen in and find out for yourself…
