Monday, February 2nd, 2009
The Secret Machines’ new full-length, Secret Machines, has been out in the US since October, but it was only a couple of weeks ago that the UK got a taste of the record. Check out some of the press quotes below, and if you happen to be in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium or France during the next month, look for the band during one of their much-anticipated dates.
Critical acclaim for Secret Machines self-titled third album…
“…the NYC three-piece are a band playing to their strengths, namely epic slabs of feedback and deliciously subtle hooks that reveal themselves with time… This first set without founding guitarist Ben Curtis brims with slow burners.” – MOJO, 4 Stars ****
“Now on their third album, the New York-based act prove the departure of Ben Curtis has not dimmed their Kraut-prog boldness. A beat heavy monster.” – Observer Music Monthly, 4 Stars ****
“A one-member line-up change hasn’t shifted this Dallas trio one iota from their nu-prog pitch… Huge riffs, drums like thunder over a Texas plain… Secret Machines’ tensile potency still invokes awe.” – The Independent, 4 Stars ****
“Secret Machines third album is a refresher course in the delights of Texan space prog filtered through the New York cool… This album reaffirms what they’re best at – making accessible prog with shiny buttons.” – The Guardian, 4 Stars ****
“Essentially, Secret Machines are a rock band based on the thundering drums of Josh Garza and restless, squalling guitars that are always willing to be reined in by the disciplines of melody. Songs such as ‘Have I Run Out’, ‘Now You’re Gone’ and ‘I Never Thought To Ask’ have a sad and ethereal beauty hovering within them.” – Evening Standard, 4 Stars ****
“On their third album they’ve taken an even more psychedelic approach. The result is powerful, layered, thoughtful, making this an album that demands your attention. With its spacious but detailed production, this is music heaven-sent for the wee small hours of a weekend morning.” – Maxim, 4 Stars **** (Album of the Month)
“Secret Machines are an attractively noisy band from Dallas… It’s a bit David Bowie, a bit Pink Floyd, a bit Psychedelic Furs; a bit Queens of the Stone Age; and, in its lengthy builds, a tough Mogwai-like too.” – Sunday Telegraph, 4 Stars ****

The psychedelic New York trio’s founding member has just come out of self-imposed exile after being isolated in a 6 x 6-foot room at Electric Lady Studios for the last 10 days, while he used Apple Loops to tackle the preparation of stems for the upcoming “Atomic Heels” Remix Contest for GarageBand.
